One Piece Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — including more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with others alternatively handling more material or more to make up for time.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
